EDUCATION

Trained as an architect in India at the prestigious IIT Kharagpur, Shyam Khandekar has always believed in the multi-disciplinarity of the design field. He has a post-graduate Diploma in Housing and Building from the Netherlands, a master’s degree in Urban Design from the University of Manchester in the UK and a Master’s degree in Urban Planning from the Technical University of Delft, Netherlands.

PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE

Shyam has nearly 5 decades of design experience leading big multi-disciplinary design teams to create large projects Paleiskwartier in Den Bosch and plan for the revitalisation of the historic city of Coevorden in the Netherlands, and Nirlon Knowledge Park in Mumbai and Alembic City in Vadodara and Bangalore in India. In all these, he has led the design team for periods ranging from 15 to 35 years.

PUBLICATIONS

Besides publishing several articles in magazines and journals in the last decades, Shyam Khandekar is the co-author/editor of the following books :

• Designing for Sustainability through Upcycling: learning from Paleiskwartier, 2021
• Streets for All: 50 ideas for shaping resilient cities, 2023
• Urban Sustainability through Brownfield Development: learning from Nirlon Knowledge Park, Mumbai, India

Since 2014, he has also been the Editor-in-Chief of the MY LIVEABLE CITY magazine.
