What does a Landscape Architect actually do, and how is it different from a garden designer?
A garden designer beautifies a space. A landscape architect transforms it — and everything around it.
Landscape architecture operates at the intersection of design, ecology, infrastructure, and human experience. At Lanarch, our work ranges from the intimate scale of a private villa garden to the complexity of an urban masterplan, a hospital campus, or a city streetscape. We think about how people move, gather, and feel within a space. We consider water, soil, climate, biodiversity, and long-term resilience alongside aesthetics. A garden designer asks how a space can look beautiful. We ask how it can work — for people, for nature, and for the future.
At what stage of a project should I bring in a Landscape Architect?
Ideally at the inception of the project — and here's why.
Landscape architecture is most powerful when it shapes a project from the beginning, not when it is applied at the end. When we are involved at the concept stage, we can influence site planning, building placement, drainage strategy, tree retention, and the relationship between built and open space. These decisions, made early, save cost, reduce environmental impact, and result in far richer outcomes. Bringing us in after construction to "green up" a site is a missed opportunity. Bringing us in at the start is an investment that pays through every phase of the project's life.
How does Lanarch approach sustainability and the natural environment in its projects?
For us, sustainability is not a feature — it is the starting point.
Every project begins with a careful reading of the land — its existing trees, topography, water movement, microclimate, and biodiversity. We design around what is already there before we introduce anything new. Native planting, rainwater harvesting, permeable surfaces, and passive cooling are not add-ons; they are embedded into the design logic from day one. We believe the most sustainable outcome is one where nature is richer after we leave a site than it was before we arrived. That is the standard we hold ourselves to, on every project, at every scale.
