NIMHANS is not just one of India's most significant mental health institutions — it is a living, working campus where patients, caregivers, students, staff, and the public all move through the same spaces, each with entirely different needs. Lanarch's engagement began not with design, but with deep listening.

A thorough appraisal of the campus mapped the built and natural environment, assessing how functions were distributed, how people moved, and where the gaps between intention and experience had quietly grown. Patient journeys, attendant routes, staff movement, and public access were all documented — revealing conflicts, shortfalls, and overlooked opportunities.

From this analysis, a Campus Design Framework emerged — setting clear guidelines for urban design, landscaping, wayfinding, sustainability, lighting, and accessibility. These guidelines were designed not just for today's interventions, but as a living document that architect teams could rely on for any future development within the campus.

Growth was planned for thoughtfully — through stakeholder meetings with patients, doctors, administrators, and staff, projected needs were translated into a phased development strategy with clear priorities. The result is a campus that is easier to read, safer to move through, and more humane in every sense — a landscape designed around recovery, dignity, and care.
