Alembic Art District

Some sites carry more than land — they carry history. Established in 1907 as a distillery alongside a railway line, Alembic Chemical Works grew into an industrial cornerstone that shaped the neighbourhoods, schools, and research institutions around it. As Vadodara expanded and operations moved outside the city, the original site was left behind — weathered, underutilised, but rich with memory.

The brief was clear: honour what existed, and build something the city could gather around. Lanarch's design for the Alembic Art District centres on a series of interconnected courtyards — varied in scale, adaptable in function — that can hold an intimate workshop as comfortably as a large cultural event. Circulation and programme are woven together, making the district as easy to move through as it is to linger in.
